Food Systems Friday Webinar - Shared screen with speaker view
Welcome and I invite you to introduce yourselves to one another here in the chat. I'll start!
Robin Currey, Director of Sustainable Food Systems, Prescott College and I care about the linkages between agricultural diversity, especially in home gardens, and dietary diversity.
Thank you, Karen!
Hi everyone! I'm Mary - I'm from Pennsylvania. :). I serve as the admissions counselor for folks interested in the MSFS program, but I am also a big foodie and am really interested in obtaining good nutrition in my diet and being respectful of how I can eat and live more sustainably.
Hi Mary! Always wonderful knowing you are here!
Hi! I’m Victoria - tuning in from Southern California! I graduated a year ago with a BS in Sustainability Studies, I’ve been vegan for a year and a half and sustainable food systems are really interesting to me. I’ve recently been finding zoom’s like this to keep me educated and entertained during quarantine, so thank you for putting this on!
Hi, I am Suzanne from Malta (in the Mediterranean :-) ) I am mainly involved in teacher training and community education on sustainable lifestyles. I have been incorporating sustainable eating in my education activities for some years now. I am interested in helping consumers of every age increase their valuation of foods - local and indigenous foods, bringing them closer to the producers and also promoting the sustainability value of the Mediterranean diet and melding sustainable choices with convenience when cooking . If anybody is interested in the latter, feel free to get in touch... firstname.lastname@example.org
Welcome, Victoria. Pleased to meet PC alumni! Here is the link to our podcast, too, for some more information about food systems by recent PC alumni - you can find it on iTunes, Spotify, etc... your regular podcast provider: https://www.thecapstone.info/
@Suzanne, I visited Malta two years ago! such a beautiful place :) Your work sounds so interesting!

Sweet potato burger looks good! :)
I studied in Italy for a couple months and learned about ancient grains and how food growers are trying to promote the use of ancient grains again for the sake of sustainability!
@Victoria, I appreciated this article that came out recently: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0168945217311640?casa_token=6z0GywtT6rMAAAAA:ZIJxocphWQzdVuv1JVVcY4siUyfJuD-kPocBUGSj_n6Sf8jpC9h6JPeph-6O28uC_pR8jr7X1G8aPA
With your exposure to the use of ancient grains in Italy, I am sure you will find it interesting!

Full disclosure, Kristina is an alumna of the MSFS program, but at the time was also a baker at Four & Twenty Blackbirds..... there are a number of original recipes in there using ancient grains.
Wow that is amazing, love how she was able to incorporate that!

We will stay until 15 minutes past the hour to address your questions but know that some of you will need to be on your way at the top of the hour! Thank you for all that you do!
Thank you for the succinct overview and very useful links and tips. I have to leave as 10pm here and I still need to sustain my husband and myself through having our supper :-)
amazing webinar, Sharon!
what measures could people take on a local level to introduce sustainable diets?
anchor institutions- schools and hospitals- good entry points!
Sharon I noticed your familiar with Sonoma County, I am possibly moving there soon, do you have any suggestions for where to get involved, I am not too familiar with that area :)
Thank you Robin and Sharon for a wonderfully informative webinar! My name is Madeline and I am a student at Grinnell College in Iowa. I want to pursue an MPH and focus on community nutrition in my work. I am interning this summer for Local Foods Connection, a nonprofit that connects low income families with local farmers and CSA shares. I am very passionate about nutrition and food access, and am wondering if you have recommendations on creating infographics/marketing materials for healthy eating for social media? What are techniques you use to make nutrition information as clear as possible?
CANVA is the free app for infographics
Thank you! Lots of good resources to review. :)
Thank you so much Robin and Sharon!
Thanks everyone for joining!
Have a great weekend, everyone!
