For those of you who are taking notes! What advice would you give to incoming students?Manage your time and be in contact with your instructors for clarityKeep a paper calendar to keep track of all of your due dates.Know your degree plan is a living document and it will change but follow it as it changes.OrganizationColor-coded calendar.Don’t forget to keep time for yourself! Schedule “me” time fun time and make sure you are managing your mental health as you balance all the rest.Make time to connect with your faculty! It is unique that you can.Connect with your classmates and cohort!
Jeff Masters
38:37
Thank you Angelina!

Johnie
39:19
Mahalo Angelina, you have been a great help over the years.
Angelina Smith she/her
39:55
It's been so good to be with you on this journey, Johnie! It's wonderful to see you thrive!
Angelina Smith she/her
42:17
A very general rule of thumb is to plan on dedicating 5 hours per credit per week. It could be more or less but this can help you to know the time you need to dedicate to your studies weekly.
Stephanie Messina (she/her/hers)
42:45
Angelina, per credit or per class?
Angelina Smith she/her
42:51
Per credit.
Angelina Smith she/her
43:01
So 3 credits is about 15 hours a week.
Aly Long (she/her)
43:13
Thank you Loui!
Angelina Smith she/her
43:14
And you can divide that 15 hours through out the week.
Stephanie Messina (she/her/hers)
43:39
So, if you are taking three classes, that's 9 credits - that's 45 hours a week.
Magdalena Roberts
44:26
I am going to meet with a new student! It is wonderful to see you all and I wish you all the best for this semester!
Gracie Morrison
44:36
I am not a panelist, but I do have ADHD meaning I have to plan. Going off what Loui said, my best tool has been to look over the assignments description and write down each step that is listed. From that list I organize it by priority (highest to Lowest) then I assign each task to a week.
Hope Presley
44:50
Stephanie, yes - definitely something to consider when deciding how many classes to take.
Gracie Morrison
45:14
each week leading up to the due date I mean. It makes it digestible for me!
Hope Presley
45:15
I work full time, and have only been taking one class per Block (2/ semester).
Angelina Smith she/her
45:50
Remember you will likely have your classes divided to sessions.
Stephanie Messina (she/her/hers)
46:45
I have to hop on a zoom call with my CEO, but I really appreciate all the information.
Risa Albrecht
46:55
Hope, that’s my plan as well. Working full time at another university
Loui Lindsay he/him/his
47:28
Scribbr.com - great citing device to help with all of your APA citing needs :)
Hope Presley
47:46
Aly - I’ll add to your question that some professors will actually write in their weekly assignment list when to start things and/or when you should be done with readings, etc.
Johnie
48:50
It may seem like a lot of hours per week, just remember to take time out to breathe. I've learned to take time away from my studies to clear my mind, especially when I'm 3 hours behind in time zone from Prescott. I usually wake up early to do my weekly assignments, and stay up late to get my work done in time each week.
Angelina Smith she/her
50:03
That's really good advice! You have to fit this into your life and your schedule!
Loui Lindsay he/him/his
51:04
I remember what it was: I was going to add that it is always a good idea to check out your discussion post assignments before doing the reading assignments so that you can be working on the post as you are going through and doing your readings :)
Hope Presley
52:04
^ oh yes, totally do this! Otherwise you’ll be scrounging to find a specific quote for your discussion
Angelina Smith she/her
52:15
I want to share our Graduate Skills Workshop flyer too! If you all want to join us to hone your reading, writing and research skills this will help!

Some of the people in my cohort planned a cabin camping week and met up at a central location over winter break. :-)
Angie Bernstein
59:39
Great idea Steve! I’m hoping the in-person week happens next year… or wonder if there could be one in the spring.
Colin H Richard (he/him/his) on Kumeyaay Land
01:00:38
Thanks so much everyone for these great responses, very appreciated!
Johnie
01:02:00
I miss face to face classes, and if I was in person at Prescott it would have really benefited me especially doing my PhD Program.
Jeff Masters
01:02:43
Can you provide more information about that fellowship for those of us who might be interested Hope?
Jeff Masters
01:02:52
Please.
Hope Presley
01:05:24
Jeff - yes, I am in the Directorate Resources Assistance Fellowship Program (DFP) with US Fish and Wildlife Service. It happens each summer, and provides students the opportunities to work on a specific project (from biology to communications, lots of options!) After completion of the fellowship and graduation you get a two year direct hiring authority and is highly regarded in FWS hiring.
Angelina Smith she/her
01:05:47
We are trying to get the PhD program back to our in person modality asap! We value safety above all so depending on what happens with Delta we hope to be in person soon but haven't formalized it all yet.

would the library send books to me here in Hawaii?
Hope Presley
01:11:41
For library books you just pay to return them, which through USPS is super cheap when sending to a library.
Angelina Smith she/her
01:12:18
They will, Johnie! Just plan for the time it will take to have them shipped.
Johnie
